Traveling solo for the first time can be an exciting and empowering experience. However, it can also be nerve-wracking and overwhelming. My first solo trip abroad was April 2015 and I did not leave my hotel alone after dark. My mom called to remind me of the movie Hostel, and that was all it took for me to get all my London sight-seeing accomplished during the day. So if my friends that reside in London were unavailable to meet, I parked it at the hotel for the night. Fast forward to present day, I find myself more aware, certain, and comfortable with solo travel. So, here are some tips to help make your first solo travel experience a success:
1. Do your research: Before you go, research your destination thoroughly. Learn about the local customs, language, and culture. This will help you feel more comfortable and confident when you arrive.
2. Plan your itinerary: Plan out your itinerary before you leave. This will help you make the most of your time and ensure you don’t miss out on any must-see attractions.
3. Stay in a safe area: When choosing your accommodation, make sure you stay in a safe area. Research the neighborhood and read reviews before booking.
4. Stay connected: Make sure you have a way to stay connected with family and friends back home. This could be through a phone plan or a messaging app.
5. Trust your instincts: Trust your instincts and be aware of your surroundings. If something feels off, it probably is. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or change your plans if necessary.
6. Pack lightly: Pack only what you need. This will make it easier to move around and keep your belongings safe.
7. Meet other travelers: Don’t be afraid to meet other travelers along the way. Join a group tour or stay in a hostel to meet like-minded individuals. However, always be on your p’s and q’s when encountering strangers!
8. Take care of yourself: Take care of yourself physically and mentally. Eat well, get enough sleep, and practice self-care.
Traveling solo can be a life-changing experience. By following these tips, you can ensure that your first solo travel experience is a success. Be safe, be alert, and always trust your gut!
